Types of Bunk Beds

Twin Bunk Beds

twin-bunk-bedsBunk beds are the most common type of  kids bunk bed, and have been around for ages.  Ideal for kids, they take up the same space as a single bed, but with bunk beds you get two sleeping areas.  The lower bunk is easily accessed by rolling into it, and the upper bunk is normally reached by means of a ladder that is either attached permanently to the bunk bed, or is hooked in place allowing removal when required.

Full Over Full Bunk Beds

full-over-full-bunk-bedsFull over full bunk beds are exactly the same as the standard twin bunk bed, only you get two standard double beds on top of each other.  The full over full bunk bed is a great option if you have a number of kids requiring sleeping space, or if you have regular guests, and you need to save space.  Accommodating up to four people, the full over full bunk bed is a great option when space is limited, but you still need to accommodate up to four people.

Twin Over Full Bunk Beds

twin-over-full-bunk-bedsTriple bunk beds or Twin over full bunk beds, are a great new idea, allowing up to three people to sleep in a very compact space.  The twin over full bunk bed comprises of a standard double bed at the bottom, and a single bed above.  Access to the top bunk is, again achieved by the use of a ladder.  A point to note with the Twin over full bunk bed, is that as the top bunk is smaller than the bottom, access to the bottom bunk is much easier than with the twin over twin, and full over full bunk bed options.

Futon Bunk Beds

futon-bunk-beds Futon bunk beds really are a great new development.  If you want a kids bunk bed with that extra bit of comfort and versatility in their bedroom, the Futon bunk bed is a great option for you.  Still able to sleep a minimum of two people, the futon bunk bed comprises of a single bed on top, with a double futon bed on the bottom bunk.  When required the bottom futon bunk can be folded down to produce a standard double bed option.  A great design and incredibly practical, the futon bunk bed gives you many options, and allows for up to three people to sleep in comfort, in a very small space.  kids Futon bunk beds can also come in other sizes, with some incorporating a single futon bed, and a study space on the bottom bunk.

Loft and Study Bunk Beds

loft-bunk-bedsLoft Beds are a great option if you need to provide sleeping space for one of your kids, and you want to give them their own private space.  Using two loft beds in a twin room, allows sleeping space for two kids, and also provides them with their own designated space, which can help to avoid arguments if space is limited.

Loft bunk beds are very versatile, and can offer a number of options, and features.  Examples of some Loft bed  variations would be.

Study Bunk Bed – Single Bunk on top, and a desk space underneath.  Leaving room for a computer, a good sized desk, and a chair and storage.

Study & Futon Bunk Bed – Smaller study space, with room for computer and chair, but also incorporating a single fold out futon bed on the bottom bunk.

Study and Storage Bunk Bed – Single study space with room for computer and chair, but also with included wardrobe space.  A great option if space is limited, especially with two kids sharing one bedroom, they can have their own study space as well as wardrobe!

Cabin Beds – Comprising a single bunk at the top, and a den or storage space  underneath, allowing kids of a younger age to enjoy their own private play space.  Some Cabin Beds also include a slide from the top bunk, making getting up in the morning for school, a bit more fun!

Bunk Bed Materials

Bunk beds are available in a number of materials, but most popular are wood and metal framed kids bunk beds.  To help you decide,  we will look at the advantages of wood and metal framed bunk beds.

Metal Bunk Beds

Metal Bunk Beds are a great and cost effective option.  With a good solid metal frame, this type of bunk bed will last for years, and remain sturdy and safe.

Usually cheaper than wood bunk beds, metal bunk beds are not quite as appealing to the eye, and can be cold to the touch, they can also appear a little bit clinical.  Metal bunk beds can, however, look great if you get the theme of your kid’s bedroom correct, so with a little thought you can get a great looking kids bedroom, and save a lot of money by buying a metal bunk bed.

Metal bunk beds will usually only come with one finish, being painted.  Due to the nature of metal, it must be finished to seal the metal frame from rusting, so options here are a little more limited than with a wood bunk bed.  A great advantage however, is that you can buy metal bunk beds in a huge range of colours, which will help you get the perfect match for your kids bedroom.

Wood Bunk Beds

Due to its versatility, wooden bunk beds come in a huge range of designs and styles.  You can choose from traditional, contemporary, themed, and luxurious.  And you can choose from a number of types of wood as well, including Pine, Oak, and Beech, as well as various veneered finishes.

Wood Bunk Beds generally cost more than metal bunk beds.  You may find examples of wooden bunk beds that are extremely cheap, and we would recommend avoiding these.  You may think that you’re getting a nice looking wooden bunk bed for even less than a metal one, but we have found that often these overly cheap wooden bunk beds can be unstable and therefore potentially dangerous for your child.  If you have set a tight budget, we would recommend going for a metal bunk bed, as they will provide the stability required to last, as well as great value.

Wood bunk beds can come in a huge range of finishes including bare treated wood – great if you have chosen a natural wood such as Oak, Pine, or Beech.  Usually costing more, hardwood bunk beds are very hard wearing, and will look great in any kid’s bedroom, the extra cost will ensure that you have a bunk bed that will last the test of kids!
